transitional living
Good Samaritan’s Transitional Living Program
serves young men and women ages 18-23 years old.
The goal of Transitional Living is to equip these young
adults with the skills, connections, and support they
need to age out of foster care and enter adulthood
with confidence and stability.
Good Samaritan is Missouri’s preferred Transitional Living provider. As the largest program of its kind in the state, one third of all transition-aged youth in foster care walk through Good Samaritan’s doors every year.
Youth in foster care 16-18 years old gain confidence in themselves while living in group homes in the first phase of the program. In this phase, youth establish a foundation of skills and relationships to build on later in adulthood.
In the group homes youth…
- Earn their high school diploma
- Begin a part-time job
- Get a driver’s license
- Open a savings account
- Become familiar with banks and budgets
- Begin therapy with Good Samaritan’s therapists
- Learn basic life skills like hygiene, cooking, and time management
Good Samaritan’s group homes serve a combined 30 youth between Darr House in Springfield and Laura’s Home in Willard.
Youth experience the thrill of moving into their first apartment and gain real-world experience at providing for themselves. Youth in this phase are generally 18-21 years old, have earned their high school diploma or GED, and have established reliable employment. Program staff visit these youth at least every 72 hours to help them navigate all adulthood brings.
In the apartments youth…
- Connect their monthly budget to long-term savings goals
- Purchase major assets such as vehicles and technology
- Apply for apartments, navigate leases, and pay rent and utilities
- Enroll in college
- Continue to attend therapy
- Find gainful employment
Good Samaritan’s apartment program currently serves around 30 youth and is rapidly expanding each year.
Youth that turn 21 and begin the third phase of the Transitional Living Program feel the satisfaction that comes with taking full ownership of their lives after foster care. In this phase, youth are wholly financially responsible for their groceries, lease, transportation, education, and mental and physical health.
Launched in 2024, Fostering Stability is Good Samaritan’s newest program. In this phase, young adults who have just aged out of foster care receive monthly gifts to develop the financial mobility needed to overcome crises, enrich their lives, and expand their vision for the future.
Only youth who are aging out of foster care in Good Samaritan’s Apartment Program will be eligible for Fostering Stability.
Every dollar donated goes directly to a youth who just aged out of foster care.
